Our Story

Cousin Avery is a folk rock band from Kalamazoo, writing and performing songs that capture an addictive acoustic folk essence with soaring strings, heartfelt vocals, plucking banjo, and a shuffling rhythm. The group carefully grows each song to connect with listeners whether on the dance floor or diving into their hearts. People discover a bond with the music and it becomes a connection for everyone.

After the departure of member Ed Martini, the band went back to the wood shed to restructure and reimagine their music. 2026 welcomes a new spring for the band, with newly arranged songs, vocal roles changed, and new instrumentation to give life to the songs in their hearts.

Cousin Avery began writing and performing in 2014 with influences that would include Mumford and Sons, The Decemberists, and Bob Dylan.

"The group focuses on the beauty that comes with not only great music and a compelling melody, but the realization that everything around you can teach you something new and, just maybe, help you brighten the world." – Matt Marn - Local Spins

They released the album Steady in 2016, and Along The Way in 2018, and All I Fear in 2020, and shared the stage with performers such as Chris Bathgate, The Last Revel, Ben Daniels Band, Chicago Farmer, Breathe Owl Breathe, Who Hit John?, Fauxgrass, and Big Dudee Roo. They have performed at the Buttermilk Jamboree, at Bell's Eccentric Cafe, and have been featured on WYCE Local Spins, and WOOD TV eightWest.
